My Unethical Coat

Got an email from War on Want about fashion industry exploitation and I was inspired to write the below email to River Island

Dear River Island CEO,

I have a very nice coat that I bought from River Island last winter. People often remark that they like it and I have been asked where I got it from.

I try to live my life ethically and seek to continually improve myself in this respect. You can imagine that I was appalled though not entirely surprised (it seems that unethical behaviour in this world is common to say the least) to learn that River Island was one of the companies highlighted by a report condemning the exploitation of workers.

Now as the seasons change I will be getting out my winter coat and will continue to wear it. But when people ask me where it is from I will tell them about River Island's exploitative practices.

In future I will be switching my fashion purchasing habits to companies with clear ethical policies. I feel that really I should be entitled to a refund as the purchase was made without this knowledge. I would then want this refund to be sent to the exploited workers in your sweatshops. Who without a living wage, proper working conditions and the right to join a trade union, make clothes for your company, working excessive hours, in appalling conditions.

In an industry that generates £36 billion in the UK alone, they’re lucky if they earn more than £1 a day.

Well, I'm afraid it isn't good enough. Not for me. And nor should it be for you. This is the time to change the system for good. If not now, then when?

I look forward to your reply

Yours Sincerely

Where's my worms??

Nearly a month ago I ordered a wormery from original organics, I don't want to do down this company because I think it's a realy good product. But I am becoming really impatient. So is my girlfriend with the smell coming from the bucket of food waste that I have been collecting in our kitchen in anticipation.
